Post Response #1
There can be no concrete definition of best for anything because its based on opinion. Something that everybody has and is likewise different for each person. To come up with our own criteria for best we should find some combination of options a and b. We should consider what we are getting yes, but we should also consider what went into getting these features, as you cant have one without the other. Ideally, we would value what effect that the product has on the world around us but that is not the case for the entire population. It helps to be thinking more globally because then you can make a difference in the world around you. And maybe that would eventually affect the products you buy.

I very much agree on the fact that a lot of what is "best" is generally opinion based. How we should value the "best" simply can't be based on a choice between an A or a B because the best really is a combination of opinion, values, needs, and wants which all depend on the situation at hand. On top of that, every situation is unique. There shouldn't be any rules that apply to every situation where 'choosing' is a factor.
ReplyDeleteClaire, Of course there are many different opinions out there about what is best. But you seem to use that as an excuse to not take a position. Remember, everyone has a right to an opinion but not every opinion is right. Is there a difference between saying an iPhone is the best because it works well and saying an iPhone is best because it reminds me of my favorite horse?
ReplyDeleteWhat I want to know from you is whether or not "best" should include factors like environmental impact, that sort of thing. Look at both sides, then take a position and explain it.
You said that we should have a set of criteria that's a mix between both options a and b, but in the end, you say that ideally we should look at the difference a product makes in the world around you. So, aren't you just picking option b? Option b does consider the superficial qualities of the product, it considers the background of the product too. A is purely about the characteristics of the product. I don't think you can mix the two.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with this response. yes it's true that defining something as "best" is a very general term, but the best should be a product that's valued as best because of its genuine beneficial value with the world's population. What i mean is that "best" should be a product that a large portion of the world's population can agree upon as being appropiately valued.Yes, you can't get everyone in this world to see things from one point of view because as human beings we naturally have different views and oppinions on different topics. In your post you say,Ideally, we would value what effect the product has on the world around us but that is not the case for the entire population. I totally agree with that statement. But just because the world's population doesn't ideally value the effect the product has on the world aroung us,doesn't mean it shouldn't be a criteria for determing what's "best".
ReplyDeleteI agree that what most people think what "best" is based on that person’s opinion. There isn’t one dominant definition of best because when deciding if something is better than another there are a lot of factor that should be considered such as what the persons criteria of best for that type of product and what value the product has to you. For example people think that the Iphone is the best touch screen phone because they have their own criteria of what best and other people think that the droid is the best touch screen phone based on their criteria. When determining the best it mainly consists of what the person’s opinion of best is.
ReplyDeleteI agree, by basing a product with our own citeria were are then comparing the like of a and b. Though there are people in this world who might value only option b, or only option a. This also being evident in the struggle in a definite definition of what is the best product. There is none. Comparing with both a and b is the best of both worlds becuase for example when apple were advertising there products and how good they were, they were also saying that if you buy this or so products consuming of features that you can enjoy and most love, you are also contributing to a research in attempt to find a cure for aids. This being an example of considering what effect this product has on the world. By your purchasing of this product, you are helping make a change in the world.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you when you say that what most people think is the best is based on their own opinion. I think that there are people in the world that only value even a or b, but there are also people that value them both. And I really agree with you that we should value what effect that the products has on the society and the world. And I do think that maybe in the closest future that we be apart of making a change in the world by purchasing the right products.
ReplyDeleteI agree that there is no concrete definiton of the "best". However each of us goes through our own process and decideds which criteria are most important on that specific topic. our criteria is conrete to the individual yet can be perceived as their opinion. The best is a personal decision based on the those things you value most.
